Freshmen at McMurry University donned shorts, sloth-cloth T-shirts and athletic shoes Saturday for the annual Slime Olympics on campus.

Freshmen were divided into 12 teams that were named for Indian tribes to compete in messy games involving eggs, syrup, pudding, shaving cream, cooking oil, water balloons and flour.

Although Shanna Coombs, a freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., was not sure about the benefits wearing a raw egg in one’s hair, she saw value in being first in her group to crack an egg on her head.

“It could be a leadership thing, being an example,” said Coombs, as she flung egg yolk from her bangs.

Senior Ryan Lake of Rowlett recognized the value of the experience for incoming freshmen to begin their McMurry experience with slime, as he stood well back from the action and giggled at the proceedings.

“The big mess it makes, people getting slimed, it’s a fun experience to watch,” Lake said.

Hillary Stone, a junior accounting major, suspected there were health benefits from raw egg hair conditioning.

“It keeps it from drying out,” she said confidently.

“It keeps your pores nice and tight,” commented Kelsey Little, an accounting senior about wearing chocolate pudding on the face.

Madison Galle, an incoming freshman from Eula, saw two benefits to wearing pudding on his face.

“It makes one more tasteful,” Galle said. “And we can get closer to our tribe members than we are our roommates.”

Julian Hernandez, a freshman from El Paso, considered the possible health risks to being anointed in substances normally found in the kitchen.

“Hopefully, insurance covers all this,” Hernandez said.

The gooey experience affected how the freshmen viewed each other, according to Misty Mitchell, a freshman from Waco.

“The guys look sweet,” said Mitchel said with a blush. “Kinda.”

William Cooper, a freshman from Fredericksburg, was hopeful about the physical effects of the event.

“This stuff helps, especially with the hair. It has a great quality value. It makes it thicker,” said Cooper, as he wiped pudding from his eyes.

Lacey Krusmark, a sports science major, contemplated why pancake syrup was used in the event as opposed to more expensive sorghum or corn syrup.

“It’s like a facial,” said Lacy, examining the tackiness on her arms. “Maybe it’s a better conditioner and moisturizer.”

Megan Curry, a logistics and marketing major from Grandview, covered with chocolate and shaving cream, summed up the experience for the group.

“I will never forget this,” Curry said. “This has been so much fun. Hey, can I get this stuff out of my hair?”

In the end, the Seminoles took first place with the most accumulated points.
